Gear & Transmission Oil

Gearboxes, differentials and automatic transmissions all depend on oil, but they do not all need the same oil. Gear oils must protect meshing teeth under high pressure, while automatic transmission fluid (ATF) also acts as a hydraulic medium and a friction modifier for clutches and bands. Using the wrong type can cause noisy shifting, poor synchromesh action or accelerated wear.

API GL ratings. GL-4 and GL-5 describe the level of extreme-pressure (EP) additive in a gear oil. GL-5 carries the heavier additive load and is designed for hypoid differentials. Some older manual gearboxes with yellow-metal (brass or bronze) synchromesh rings are sensitive to the sulphur-phosphorus chemistry in GL-5, and manufacturers of those units often specify GL-4. Read your handbook before substituting one for the other.

Viscosity. Gear oils use SAE grades such as 75W-90, 80W-90 or 85W-140. Higher numbers give a thicker film at temperature, but can make shifting stiffer in cold weather. Limited-slip differentials may call for an oil formulated for LS use, or a separate friction modifier.

ATF. Automatic transmission fluids are specified by type, for example Dexron or manufacturer-specific codes, and older transmissions may call for a specific classic ATF type. Match the exact specification printed in the handbook or on the dipstick instructions.
