Additives, Fluids & Car Care

Beyond engine and gear oils, a vehicle relies on several other fluids and maintenance products. This collection groups the supporting items: additives, coolant, AdBlue, shock absorber oil, cleaners and car care products. Each has a specific job, and the details matter.

Coolant. Engine coolant is a mix of antifreeze concentrate and water, with corrosion inhibitors that protect aluminium and iron alike. Different coolant chemistries exist, so follow the manufacturer's specification and avoid mixing types. The stated protection temperature, such as minus 36 degrees Celsius, tells you the freezing point of the ready-mixed liquid.

AdBlue. AdBlue is a urea solution used in diesel vehicles with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. It must meet ISO 22241 and is not a fuel additive: it goes into its own tank, usually next to the filler cap.

Shock absorber oil. Classic dampers and fork legs use a thin hydraulic oil whose viscosity influences damping. Thinner grades give a softer ride, thicker grades firmer control. Use the grade the vehicle maker or damper specialist recommends.

Additives, cleaners and care. Fuel system additives are intended for occasional cleaning of injectors and valves, not as a substitute for correct maintenance. Brake cleaner removes oil and dirt from brake parts, but should only be used in a ventilated space and kept away from plastics and paint. Check each label for instructions before use.
