Choosing the right oil
SAE 140 is a very heavy gear oil. It is for gearboxes and differentials whose manual specifically names a 140 weight. Its pour point is -9 °C, so it is an oil for warm-weather running; if you use the car in cold weather, a thinner grade from the shop is a better option, provided the manual allows it.
Choosing between this and the 80W-90 GL-4 gear oil is a simple question of what the manual says. Do not choose the thicker oil as a way of quieting a worn box unless the manufacturer or an experienced specialist suggests it.
Larger packs suit clubs and workshops that service several vehicles.
