Choosing the right oil
Choose SAE 80 when the handbook or gearbox plate for an older car asks for an 80 weight GL-4 oil. The grade is thinner than the SAE 90 oils in the same range, which can make a difference to cold shifting in synchromesh boxes. If the manual asks for GL-5 hypoid oil in the gearbox, this is not the right choice, and many older synchromesh gearboxes with yellow-metal parts specifically do not want GL-5.
Match the SAE number and the API level to your manual first; the Classic Gear range covers several grades, so compare EP 80, EP 90 and the other variants before ordering.
