Choosing the right oil
SAE 40 sits in the middle of the Pistoneeze family, between 30 and 50. Choose it when the handbook of a classic or vintage engine names SAE 40, and when you want a straight-weight oil with ZDDP rather than a modern low-additive formulation.
Millers Oils is clear about one point: for vintage vehicles it assumes the owner is sure that no dirt or deposits have built up in the sump, because a detergent oil can release them. If you are not sure, have the engine inspected before switching oils.
For later vehicles, it is suitable where high-quality oil filtration systems were designed for monograde oils with detergent and dispersant additives. If you want a multigrade for easier winter starts, look at the Classic Sport or Classic Multigrade oils in the classic oils range.
