Choosing the right oil
15W-40 sits between the thinner 10W-30 and the thicker 20W-50 in this range. It is the natural choice when the handbook of a 1960s to early 1980s car names 15W-40, or when you are moving from a straight SAE 30 or 40 to a multigrade for easier winter starting.
If you are weighing 15W-40 against 20W-50, think about the engine rather than the oil: a tired engine with generous clearances and a tendency to lose oil pressure when hot often does better on the thicker grade, while an engine in good condition that asks for a lighter oil should not be forced onto a heavier one.
The product is described as not loosening old deposits, which helps when changing oil in an engine that has not been flushed.
