A 5W-40 with an A3/B4 listing is a common choice for petrol and diesel engines of the 2000s that name VW 502 00 / 505 00, MB 229.3 or BMW LL-01 in the handbook. It is not a low-SAPS (C-category) oil, so do not use it where your car is fitted with a particulate filter and the manual requires a C2/C3 grade.
